Car Free Day 2019

International Car Free Day takes place on 22 September every year. For London, 2019's event is set to be the biggest yet, with over 20km of roads in Central London set to become traffic-free for the day.

Iconic locations including Bank Junction and Tower Bridge will be reimagined from congested streets into festival locations, outdoor yoga studios, parklets and more.

As well as the central London event, 23 London boroughs will be supporting hundreds of Play Streets across London and many boroughs will be holding their own Car Free Day events. Find out what's happening in your area below:

In Hackney, Stoke Newingotn Church Street will be transformed by removing private motor vehicles to allow residents, businesses and visitors to imagine what the street could look like with fewer vehicles. If you would like to get involved please email movegreener@hackney.gov.uk. Across the borough, the Council and Hackney Play Streets are facilitating a mass play street event, inviting existing and new hosts to host on Car Free Day. In Islington, the section of St John Street between Clerkenwell Road and Charterhouse Street will be shut to through traffic and is open for the whole borough to enjoy vehicle free. There will be a whole range of free activities, games and art workshops plus kids cycle training, Pedal Power and Dr Bike. More details are here. Islington residents can also apply for a Play Street on their own street until 9 September. Full details for how to apply are here.

In Tower Hamlets, the Council have organised a range of free activities in Roman Road, Bow including giant human table football, Jenga, Connect 4 and chess. Bikeworks will be running an all ability cycling taster session and Dr Bike will be providing a free bike mechanic service for local riders. There will also be an area for people to sit, relax and socialise between activities.
